Review: House of Social Graces by Lucy Silvano

Book: House of Social Graces by Lucy Silvano Genre: Fiction Ranking: 3.5 stars “House of Social Graces” is a charming novel. The storyline is centered on female characters mostly. One of the main reasons that I really liked this novel is that like the main character I’m also an immigrant, not in London of course, but still I can relate to Rose Mendes in this area. The way she misses American food and culture is same for all immigrants, no matter which country they belong to, but I can feel it. Rose Mendes is from California but she is an immigrant in London. Like countless other people obsessed with English literature, she also wants to settle her life in London. In order to receive work permit, she applies for tutoring. Fortunately, she got a job of foreign etiquette teacher at a very high-status “House of Social Graces.” This story revolves around how Rose tries to get used to school and CEO “Caroline Jones” who is a real pain in the neck. Meanwhile, she also met an American guy, Francis, who is such a sweet guy to date with. She faces plenty of hardships in her job and has to tolerate her bipolar boss in order to complete her three months probationary period. Can Rose get her work permit? Can she fulfill her dream to live in London? Can she and Francis end up together? I must say that Lucy Silvano’s writing style is remarkable. Every small detail is explained in a very poetic way. I just wish there was more to Rose and Francis relationship and how her life unveils after she makes final decision about her career. Although, it was a bit of a slow read in the middle, overall, this novel was undeniably enjoyable. Recommended!
