There are some poetry collections you read, and then there are those you feel—quietly, deeply, almost like they settle somewhere inside your body. I’ll Leave a Light On for You by William Bortz belongs firmly to the latter category for me.

From the very first poem, I felt as though I was being invited into a deeply intimate space—one where grief is not hidden, but gently held; where joy is not loud, but flickers softly like a candle in the dark. What stayed with me throughout the collection is Bortz’s delicate understanding of what it means to hold on—to people, to memories, to fleeting moments—even while knowing that nothing, including ourselves, remains unchanged.

One of the most striking aspects of this collection is how the poet treats the body—not merely as a physical entity, but as a vessel of memory, pain, healing, and transformation. Lines like “This body is meant to break and from its shell light will pour out” resonated with me on a deeply personal level. There is something profoundly comforting in this idea—that our fractures are not just signs of damage, but also openings through which light can emerge.

At the same time, the collection never lets you sink too deeply into despair. It offers quiet, almost tender reminders of connection and belonging. The image of “two hands from two bodies placed on top of one another creates a home” lingered with me long after I finished reading. It made me reflect on how sometimes, home is not a place, but a moment of understanding, a gesture of care, or simply the presence of another person.

What I truly appreciated about this book is its emotional honesty. Bortz does not try to resolve grief neatly or offer easy answers. Instead, he allows contradictions to coexist—pain alongside hope, breaking alongside healing, solitude alongside connection. As a reader, I found this incredibly authentic. It mirrors the way we actually experience life—not in clear binaries, but in overlapping, messy, and beautifully complex emotions.

Reading this collection felt almost like revisiting my own memories—the ones I hold on to, even when they hurt, and the ones I fear losing as I continue to grow and change. It made me pause and reflect on how we carry people within us long after they are gone, and how even in absence, something of them remains—like a light left on.

Overall, I’ll Leave a Light On for You is not just a poetry collection; it is an experience of quiet introspection. It is for anyone who has ever loved deeply, lost something meaningful, or struggled to reconcile who they were with who they are becoming. For me, it was a reminder that even in our most fragile moments, there is still something within us that refuses to go out.

And perhaps that is the “light” the poet speaks of—a small, steady glow of hope that we leave behind for others, and for ourselves.
