Book Review
Book: A Court of Thorns and Roses
Author: Sarah J. Mass
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: 5 stars
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Feyre's survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price ...
Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre's presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.
My Review:
Finally!!!! There has been this huge buzz about this book on Instagram since the day joined that I’ve been meaning to sink my teeth into this series long ago. Because of my extra huge tbr list, I could not pick it up soon and, although I regret for not reading it before, I’m beyond happy that I finally managed to read it. And guess what???? I’m in love with this book. This is my first S.J.M book and it has completely knocked my socks off!!!!
Not only this is my first S.J.M book, this is also my first retelling story. But the fact is that this was no Beauty and the Beast retelling. Nah!! This was so much more than any retelling.
Before sinking my teeth into this beauty, I actually read all the comments and reviews by other readers and, naturally, was looking forward to know about these legendary characters everyone is singing praises about. I already heard a lot about Feyre and Rhysand, but what I didn’t see coming was the fact the, before Rhys, Tamlin is going to steal my heart in this book. Yes, yes, I know, a lot of people don’t like Tamlin and maybe I start disliking him in other books, but in this particular book, Tamlin is going to have you weak in knees. He is a perfect, swoon worthy, hot man, High Lord and, oh man, did I love him!!! And then comes, our Lucian, red-haired fox, Tamlin’s best friend. I loved him to the core. He is witty, funny, extremely caring, ready to die for Tamlin and Feyre, and a sexy fox with one eye. In the beginning I was unsure who I like more, Tamlin or Lucian – Lucian’s loyalty for Tamlin made him one of my favorite characters. And then comes our Rhysand, the dark, wounded prince, I mean High Lord. He is such a little bastard that you are supposed to hate but you still end up loving him. Although this book did not show much of his character development, I’m too excited to read more about his sexy dialogues, flattery, witticism, and sarcastic remarks in next book.
Lastly, I want to talk about main female lead, Feyre. Although she gave me the vibes of Katniss from The Hunger games in the beginning, I loved her for her own character. Where everyone and everything in this book is about immortal faeries, everlasting beauty and high lords, she is a simple mortal girl. She is brave, intelligent and selfless girl – and a huntress. The reason why she hunts is not because she enjoys killing innocent animals but because she has to feed her sisters and crippled father. She does what needs to be done without expecting anything in return. And her relationship with Tamlin – hatred to love – is ship worthy. Their love games, its growth and all push and pull is so well written that it had my brain fuzzy and rocked at the same time. Even the evil character of Amarantha is portrayed so vividly that you can’t help being fascinated by her devilish and revengeful character – a perfect evil queen.
I loved the way Mass has shown various love interests in her book. At first, I thought there is something important about Isaac – a human boy Feyre was seeing, and then comes Tamlin, perfect match for Feyre, and then Rhysand – like seriously????
The story of this book is as strong and powerful as its characters. Everything is happening with a flow – no loopholes, no boring lengthy descriptions, no hiccups. And then ending!!!! Just too perfect, nail biting and gut wrenching ending it is!! Mass could not have ended it in a more mysterious, perfect and wtf way.
I could fill unlimited pages to pour my thoughts and praises about this book and its characters, and could not get anywhere near to do justice with how much I really loved this book. I’m still floating in its trance. This is a perfect book that will make your heart race, give you goose bumps and you will be all too ready to lose your beauty sleep only to keep reading it. Can’t recommend enough!!!
